As the old saying goes, “the chickens are coming home to roost” in Hollywood, Washington D. C., and elsewhere. Allegations of sexual abuse, harassment, and even rape are being leveled against some of the most powerful men in the country. In this short article I want to focus just on the allegations in Hollywood. Producers, directors, star actors, and agents are being identified by actors and actresses as predators. It is big news because of the star power making the accusations but the truth is the culture in Hollywood has been morally depraved for many years.

If the term “casting couch” is unfamiliar to you, it is a term coined back in the 1920s in Hollywood. The idea behind the casting couch is that casting agents, producers, and directors for motion pictures would exchange acting parts in films for sexual favors with aspiring young women. It was never right or moral but it was commonplace. To use the Latin phrase “quid pro quo,” it was “this for that,” an exchange that benefitted both parties. It was the casting couch and much more that gave Hollywood its justified reputation as a moral cesspool devoid of traditional values.

Certainly most of the actresses today adding their names to #METOO are justified in their rage at powerful, rich men who took advantage of them in their younger years. Some, however, are not as honorable as the media and the women would have us believe. Some were not victims but willing participants in quid pro quo arrangements. As Elsie says, “if you have a choice, you are not a victim, you’re a volunteer.” God commands us to “be holy even as He is holy” (1 Peter 1:16).

Hollywood will not draw us closer to God, reinforce godly, biblical values, or give us examples of holy living. Beware of listening to their opinions or watching their films. Rarely do they feed your soul.
