Anxiety disorders are the most common mental concern in the United States, affecting 40 million adults in the United States age 18 and older, or 18% of the population every year. Approximately 8% of children and teenagers experience an anxiety disorder. Most people develop symptoms before age 21. Anxiety disorders are highly treatable, yet many who suffer with them do not receive treatment. A combination of genetics and environment are considered to be the main factors contributing to the cause of anxiety disorders.

As we conduct couple counseling, Elsie and I often hear from clients that they believe their spouse is trying to confuse them or tells them that they’re losing their memory, or making things up, or going crazy. Counseling professionals call this form of abuse “gaslighting.” Rather than try to explain it in my own terms, the National Domestic Abuse Hotline defines it well with corresponding examples. When Elsie and I were newlyweds, I went to work for my dad and his advertising agency in Chicago, Illinois. I worked for him for a little over a year before I went off to basic training in the United States Air Force. Because Elsie and I lived in an apartment in Glen Ellyn, Illinois, it was convenient for my dad to leave his home in Wheaton, Illinois, pick me up, and keep on going down the Eisenhower Freeway into the city. Let’s think theologically for a few minutes. Since God is sovereign He can do anything He pleases, right? As the King of the universe and the Creator of everything He has the right to rule His creation. He’s the Boss! Romans 9:21 teaches us of this sovereign right in describing God as the Potter. “Does not the potter have a right over the clay, to make from the same lump one vessel for honorable use and another for common use?” The answer demanded is, yes He does.

What about man? Don’t humans bear responsibility for their decisions, good or bad? Yes, they do, but humans are not sovereign over the universe, God is. We have a free will and must bear the responsibility for our choices.
