“Sound the Battle Cry!” written by William F. Sherwin and published in 1868 is now in Public Domain. It is a favorite gospel hymn sung by believers of all ages through the years since it was written. The Timeless Truths website indicates that the subject of the song is warfare, and it was based on Isaiah 59:19 and I Timothy 6:12.

Sound the battle cry! See, the foe is nigh;
Raise the standard high for the Lord;
Gird your armor on, stand firm every one;
Rest your cause upon His holy Word.

In John 11 we read the fascinating story of the death and resurrection of one of Jesus’ friends, a man named Lazarus. Lazarus and his two sisters, Mary and Martha, lived in the village of Bethany, about 2 miles east of Jerusalem. Jesus often stayed with these three single adults when He made pilgrimages to Jerusalem for the three major feasts: Passover, Pentecost, and Tabernacles. Jesus loved these three siblings.

Interestingly, Lazarus in Hebrew means “God has helped.” God the Son helped Lazarus fulfill his name when Jesus called him to come back to life. Lazarus’ story is fascinating. Perhaps it’s because we are counselors but one of our favorite movies is “What About Bob?” Without reciting the whole plot, the film, starring Richard Dreyfuss and Bill Murray, is the interaction between psychiatrist, Dr. Leo Marvin (Dreyfuss), and client, Bob Wiley (Murray). Bob Wiley is a “multiphobic personality” which makes him afraid of virtually everything. He comes to Dr. Marvin for help. When Bob realizes that Dr. Marvin could actually help him, he obsesses on him. So even though Marvin and his family are going on vacation, Bob decides to track them down and shows up uninvited at their idyllic vacation home on Lake Winnipesaukee. All of us know secrets, things which others don’t know but we do. Perhaps it’s a family secret that would be embarrassing if exposed. Perhaps it’s a secret talent that no one knows you have. Whatever the secret, it is something you know but others don’t.

The Apostle Paul speaks of the secret of the Christian life.
