As you watched one of the ubiquitous car commercials on television or your tablet you probably heard in the background the chorus of One Republic’s hit song, “Can I Get a Connection?” It’s pretty catchy though a bit repetitious, “Can I get a connection? Can I get, can I get a connection? Can I get a connection? Can I get, can I get a connection?” What does the song writer want? He wants to connect with somebody in a meaningful relationship. Read the first stanza of the song and you’ll sense the desperation behind the words of the chorus:
These days my waves get lost in the oceans
Seven billion swimmers, man I'm going through the motions
Sent up a flare, I need love and devotion
Traded for some faces that I never know, notion
Maybe I should try to find the old me
Take me to the places and the people that know me
Tryin' to disconnect, thinking maybe you could show me
If there's so many people here, then why am I so lonely?
Did you catch the final phrase, “then why am I so lonely?” With 7 billion swimmers in the ocean of humanity, why is he so lonely? The answer is he needs a connection with somebody, somebody to know him and give him love and devotion.
He’s not alone. Isn’t that the heart cry of all of us? Don’t we all need a connection with somebody who will know us, love us, and be loyal to us? The trouble is human connections are temporary and fracture over time through death, divorce, relocation, conflict, etc. More than connecting with another human being, important as that is, what we really need is a connection with God, a permanent connection with the God who says He will never leave us or forsake us. God wants a connection with us. The Bible declares:
You will seek and find me when you seek me with all your heart. Jeremiah 29:13
For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost. Luke 19:10
God wants a connection with you. The Bible declares that having a connection with you was the driving force behind why God sent His Son, Jesus Christ, into this world. He wants a connection with you that transcends Sunday worship, ministry activities, mission trips, youth group, etc. All those are good but they are no substitute for a true connection with God. He wants you to know Him, love Him, and be loyal to Him. He is seeking you because He wants you. He loves you. He is loyal to you and knows you better than anybody on the planet.
Draw near to God and He will draw near to you,
